SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER
Letter to:
teacher-counselor
I'm reaching out because something is happening that I think requires more than a standard response to bullying. Lipedema is a medical condition that affects an estimated 11% of young women and commonly onset at puberty. It causes disproportionate fat accumulation in the legs and sometimes the arms, along with pain, fatigue, and easy bruising. Students who have it didn't develop their bodies through choices their peers can understand or relate to, and they can't change them through diet or exercise. When those bodies become a target, it isn't just social cruelty. It's bias directed at a medical condition that most people, including most adults, have never been taught exists. The most useful intervention here isn't just addressing the behavior. It's closing the knowledge gap that makes the behavior feel acceptable in the first place. I'd welcome a conversation about how to bring accurate information into the classroom. [Your name]
